“I’ll never forget the first time I saw Palm Springs. I’d just moved from Manhattan to Los Angeles, but my body clock was still on East Coast time. I got up before dawn, grabbed my car keys, and headed for the desert. The midway stretch of the I-10 freeway felt interminable and desolate, but I kept driving towards the sunrise. Eventually 2,000 towering wind turbines at the majestic San Giorgioni Mountain Pass came into view. Twenty minutes later, I turned onto Palm Canyon Drive, and was amazed. It was as if I’d landed in 1948.” .
